Despotic is an adjective that describes a system of government where power is held by a single person or a small group of people who exercise absolute control over citizens. In a despotic regime, leaders are not accountable to their subjects, and they rule without regard for popular opinion, the rule of law, or individual rights. Law and justice are often subject to the whim of rulers, who can use their power to oppress and exploit their subjects. Furthermore, they have complete control over the economy and often use it to benefit themselves and their cronies. Examples of despotic governments include monarchies, dictatorships, and absolute monarchies.
